If you’re a long term reading (hello to you!), you may remember that I once had Google Adverts on Ejecutive to raise money for charity, and having it turning out to be a relative disaster. You many also remember my position on placing advertisments on Ejecutive for my own monetary gain. I’ve just changed my position.
What is an advert? It is the process of promoting someone elses service or product for your own monetary gain. Why did I think it was wrong in the first place? Because I don’t need to make the money. Why would I want to add extra content into my site that is possibly distracting and could deter users from visiting it when I don’t need the money? Because adverts are so much part of the fabric of web pages, that anyone who’s detered by adverts wouldn’t be using the internet at all.
Adverts are everywhere. While sites like Ejecutive can survive without them, many cannot. I probably use a few gigabytes of bandwidth per month, so I can manage on quite a small hosting packing costing £5.99 a month. While its not that much money, it’s still money out of my pocket every month. My hope is that eventually this site will become popular enough that revenue from adverts alone will be enough to pay for my hosting costs, but that is still some way away.
The adverts are here to stay, at least for the time being. I’ve not decided whether I’ll integrate them into the re-branding yet, but if they’re successful, you can bet your bottom pound that they’ll be around somewhere.
