If you followed anything remotely related to British popular music culture, then you know of Top of the Pops. Even five years ago, it was the de-facto program to springboard your new release. They had the biggest stars in the world appear on it, and it was seen as a great honor.
It had the prime time slot of Friday at 7:30PM on BBC1 for many years, and had huge ratings and viewers, which is the main reason why anyone who wanted to make it big in British music appeared on it. But now, it’s been relegated to 7PM on Sunday on BBC2, and only a short straw from being cancelled or relegated further to BBC3. Why has this show gone from one of the BBC’s flagships to an embaressement?
To be honest, I don’t really know. MTV? If that was the case then TOTP would’ve gone under years ago. It’s relied on several relaunches and makeovers to stay afloat. However, the basic format hasn’t changed since the beginnings in the sixties; artists performing on a stage. While this might have been revolutionary in the sixties, the show needs to be seriously updated to keep up with the twenty first century, or be axed as it deserves to be.
Hands up who still watches Top of the Tops?
