New York Times film critic A.O. Scott talks about if they’re becoming more out of touch with popular culture:
Are we out of touch with the audience? Why do we go sniffing after art where everyone else is looking for fun, and spoiling everybody’s fun when it doesn’t live up to our notion or art? What gives us the right to yell “bomb outside a crowded theater? #

It’s interesting what he says… but he doesn’t half blab on a bit!
Thing is, they are their opinions. They are entitles to their opinions - in fact, that is what they are paid for. However, when a lot of people pay to take heed of the reviews, perhaps there is a pressure to be overly critical - or conversely, overly complimentary - to suit the audience. For example, I doubt American Pie was a hit in Saga Magazine…
So I believe we ought to change our way of thinking with regards to these articles. They aren’t reviews, so don’t take them seriously. Instead, use them as a way of getting to know the author!
