Steven Frank has some good analysis about the recent Google Android announcement:
A 34-company committee couldn’t create a successful ham sandwich, much less a mobile application suite.
It’s going to be some half-baked turd undoubtedly based on GPE since that’s, you know, better than starting
from scratch, right? (Wrong.)

Google has announced a new software platform for mobile phones, which means its going up against Microsoft, RIM and Symbian. The difference is that Google is offering it’s Android system for free.
No news of a Google Phone, “but Mr Schmidt would not rule out the release of a GPhone in the future.”

Well almost released, the BlackBerry Curve 8310 is set to be released on the 3rd September and is the first BlackBerry with GPS.
I was in London over the weekend, and completely forgot to bring a map with me. Being a cheapskate, I didn’t want to buy an overpriced tourist map, but I do have Google Maps on my mobile phone which allowed me to find where to go.
What would’ve made it even better though, is to have it paired with GPS as we all know its a bit disorientating when you step out of an underground station.
Oh wait, you can.

An online shoe store owner has threatened to sue Dean Hunt if he doesn’t remove [his] blog from google [sic] for this search term
, because his blog has a higher PageRank than the store.
His justification is that because Google is a business, they should rank other business higher than non-commercial sites. This couldn’t be further from the truth: Google ranks sites based on their popularity, and being a commercial site hurts your popularity unless you have some interesting content to offer. Most blogs, on the other hand, feature completely non-commercial content that is far more informative than what an online shop would offer, so Google love them.
Ironically, now that there are lots of sites linking to DeanHunt.com, it’s probably just going to increase his PageRank and make it even harder for the shoe site owner to compete. Retard.

It’s happened, Google buys YouTube for a whopping $1.65 billion (£887 million). The $580 million (£312 million) paid by News Corp for MySpace seems paltry in comparison.

Today is Google’s eighth birthday, happy birthday Google. Although it didn’t get off to the best of starts.

Google’s excellent photo management tool Picasa version 2.5, is out of beta and ready to download. There are release notes too.
Google have finally decided (almost a year after I sign up) to let me trial Gmail for your domains, even though I now have no interest in it now as I host my own email!
However, if you for some reason want a @weiran.co.uk email address, then you can have one for free. Nothing beats free eh?

If you’re a long term reading (hello to you!), you may remember that I once had Google Adverts on Ejecutive to raise money for charity, and having it turning out to be a relative disaster. You many also remember my position on placing advertisments on Ejecutive for my own monetary gain. I’ve just changed my position.

I’ve recently been having a few problems with my various servers around the internet. I don’t know if you noticed, but Ejecutive had a bit of downtime yesterday afternoon, and my e-mail was down for most of the day. This lead me thinking about ASPs again, and whether it was time to reconsider our perceptions about them.
